Imagined alongside the exhibitions and programs at Wild Trumpets, and led by talented artists, our studio workshops invite young artists to train their eye and sharpen their sensibility for contemporary creativity.

Through collaboration, painting, installation, sculpture, performance, and more, children are invited on a journey that starts with art history, encourages critical thinking about the present, and looks ahead into the future of art.

Art Workshops

The workshops will focus on freedom of expression, considering alternative frameworks for living and new ways of seeing. Children will experiment sculpturally through the medium of clay and modrock.

We will begin with an introduction to decorative art and the work of the Bloomsbury artists within Charleston Farmhouse. This was followed by a drawing exercise, responding to a series of everyday objects, considering how to change or alter their purpose and function. Children will then engaged in experimental making from the drawings into plasticine maquettes.

Next, looking at Picasso’s pots and plates, considering the merging of art, sculpture, and function. Working from the collages of previous weeks, we made everyday objects out of clay to later use as ‘canvases’ to paint on.

Expanding our focus out of the home and into the architecture of our cities, children will consider how buildings are decorated. Looking at the hidden art of cities, focusing on Portuguese tiles in the city of Lisbon, and asked the question: how might we decorate our cities?

Sculpture and Clay Workshop

Multi-disciplinary artist Kirico Ueda planned a series of workshops over the course of five weeks for our Thursday groups.

Kirico is fascinated by the magical and primitive power of folktales, myths, and theater, and invited our young artists to explore the old tradition of shadow puppetry, and shadows that told a tale of time long gone...

We will travel back into history, as early as the fifth century B.C., when the first historian, Herodotus, referred to figures operated by strings in ancient Egyptian ceremonies and processions. Together we talked about how masks and puppets had been used for centuries to add magic to the storyteller’s craft.

Children will explore artists (e.g., William Kentridge and Christian Boltanski), who, like Kirico, use puppetry in their art practice - and guide children in the creation of their own shadow puppet with a fantastic performance at the end.

Wild Trumpets is an artist-led gallery and project space. We host birthday parties, camps and weekly after school workshops led by artists and curated for children to unleash their creativity. Wild Trumpets is a space for children of ages 4-12 to create, explore and further develop (or begin) their art practices, through a variety of conversations and mediums.
