Description

Let’s go fly a kite, up on the Western Heights!

Join us for a joyful day of kite flying, creativity and discovery at Dover’s iconic hilltop fort.

Bring your own kite or make one for free in our drop-in workshops, then watch the skies fill with colour during spectacular displays from the Kent Kite Flyers. Discover traditional Afghan kite-making with master kite makers and learn about the cultural significance of their designs.

There’s plenty more to explore – learn all about the re-introduction of the rare red-billed chough, soaring again in skies over Dover, and step inside the Grand Shaft, open specially for the day. Enjoy refreshments at the Citadel Welcome Centre Café and treat yourself to local ice cream from the Solley’s caterpod.

This is a free, family-friendly event with free parking on site – no booking required.

Please note, the main event will take place on Dover Town Council's sports field on Citadel Road, CT17 9DP. What3Words ///soaps.bundles.sued

This event is part of English Heritage's Reaching Greater Heights project and Dover District Council's Western Heights Regeneration project.

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Reaching Greater Heights is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to restore historic chalk grasslands at Dover Castle and Western Heights, protect rare wildlife and heritage, and empower local communities through volunteering, learning, and activities.

With support from Historic England and the UK Government, Dover District Council are working to regenerate Dover’s Western Heights—restoring historic views, improving safety, and reconnecting the site with the town through conservation, community engagement and heritage-led regeneration.
