Vale of White Horse

Journey along (possibly) the oldest road in Britain, the Ridgeway, and time travel from the Neolithic to the Romans!

We will visit the 5,000 year old Neolithic tomb of Wayland’s Smithy before following the ancient Ridgeway to the Uffington White Horse, Britain’s oldest chalk hill figure.

Exploring the myths, folklore, and archaeology of this iconic landscape, we will uncover the cosmic significance of the horse as well as other key sites in the landscape, including Uffington Castle and Dragon Hill.

This tour is graded as moderate access, as it is a walking tour with uneven roads and with few places to stop and rest.

Bookings will open on Wednesday 15 July at 9am.

Make and Mend brings together around 20 artists, inviting their creative responses to Belsay’s rich heritage through a range of disciplines, including textiles, furniture, photography, and architectural studies.

The exhibition blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques, celebrating both the history of making and the ongoing art of preservation.

Great British Summer At Dover Castle

Audley End is celebrated for its magnificence: beautifully furnished rooms and fine objects, carefully arranged and presented for visitors. Yet above these showpiece interiors lies another, lesser-known world.

Running from May to November 2026, Behind Closed Doors is a new exhibition that offers a rare glimpse into the hidden second-floor rooms, long closed to the public. Once guest bedrooms and servants’ quarters, they now function as store rooms, revealing a quieter side of life within the house.

Through the photographs of Lachlan French and Clive Downes, these interiors evoke a faded splendour, carefully preserved as if a moment frozen in time.

In contrast to the rooms below, they offer a more subtle beauty, shaped by memory, atmosphere, and the traces of lives once lived behind closed doors.

On Saturday 11 April and Saturday 25 July, discover the craft behind traditional farmhouse cider in one of the county’s most atmospheric historic settings.

Taking place in the castle shop, this relaxed tasting is a great opportunity to explore a hand-picked selection of Pips’ award-winning ciders while hearing the stories behind their orchards, apples, and slow fermentation methods.

Whether you’re a long-time cider lover or simply curious to try something new, you’ll learn about the heritage of local cider making, sample a range of distinctive blends, and chat directly with the makers.

Local Cider Tasting At Goodrich Castle

Join us at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings for a series of talks run by our knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers. These talks are free, but donation contributions to English Heritage will be welcome.

The talks will run on the last Saturday of the month at 1pm to 1.30pm in the Smithy at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.
