Description

It is said there has been a church on this site since Roman times. Hear how Benedictine monks rebuilt the Saxon church into a magnificent monastery, with architecture from Romanesque to early English Gothic right the way through to perpendicular Gothic. Learn 450 years of intrigue and gossip about how the inhabitants of the monastery became one of the richest in the land until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII.

Discover the story of the conversion of the building into an Anglican cathedral. Hear all about the architecture and how it became the heart of the city of Chester, before seeing an introduction to the city streets that the Cathedral calls its home.

This tour is graded as moderate access, as it is a tour covering cobbled streets with few places to stop and rest.
