Summer Fun And Games At Battle Abbey

Experience the power and glamour of John Singer Sargent’s portraits in Kenwood's new exhibition; Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits.

Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits will reveal the real stories behind the fascinating American women who crossed the Atlantic to marry British aristocrats in an exchange of money for titles. These women include a war-time nurse and the first sitting female MP.

Sargent was one of the most sought-after artists of the Gilded Age and was ‘the artist’ to depict these intriguing women. On the centenary of his death, the exhibition will be a salute to John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), the most admired and sought-after portraitist of the Gilded Age on both sides of the Atlantic. These portraits represent some of his most glamorous and powerful works. In addition to full-length oil paintings, masterful charcoal portraits will also feature, depicting their subjects in a candid and perceptive light.

Heiress: Sargent’s American Portraits is curated by English Heritage with the charity drawing upon the expertise of Richard Ormond CBE. The renowned Sargent scholar and the artist’s great-nephew is the exhibition’s consultant.

Join our collections team in the Archaeological Collections Store and discover a treasure trove of unique and special objects spanning 2,000 years of England's history. These are objects not normally on display, and form around a third of our total stored collection.

This year the tours will focus on objects from Roman Wroxeter, Hill Hall and Thetford Priory.

Tours are free and can be booked when you arrive at Wrest Park.

Join our experienced Deaf guide and historian, John Wilson for a British Sign Language (BSL) tour of Stonehenge.

Discover the incredible story of one of the world’s most famous places in BSL. The tour will cover the history of this unique monument, including theories as to how the stones were brought to Salisbury Plain, where the stones originated from, and the latest research.

British Sign Language Guided Tour Of Stonehenge

Join one of our knowledgeable visitor assistants at Kenilworth Castle to learn of the undoing of Edward II, and how at this very castle, he was forced to renounce his crown. You will be led through the ruins of the once grand inner court to hear all about this king’s infamous rule and rumoured illicit relationships with certain ‘favourites’ of the court.

This event has been graded as moderate access. There will be limited places to stop and rest and may include some uneven terrain and steps.

Members' Event:

Join us to take a closer look the graffiti marks left on Carlisle Castle over the centuries with Emma Bryning from the University of York. Learn more about the symbolism and meaning behind certain carvings, as well as other fascinating examples of graffiti at other English Heritage properties.

This tour is graded as moderate access, as there are a large number of stairs to navigate around the site. Some of this tour will involve being outdoors to navigate site, and the castle can be cold.

After extensive renovations, we are thrilled to invite you to step back in time and explore the newly restored Eastbridge Hospital. This historic gem, once a haven for travelling pilgrims visiting the Shrine of St Thomas Becket, is ready to welcome visitors once again.

Come and experience the rich history and timeless hospitality of Eastbridge Hospital. Don't miss this unique opportunity to walk through the halls that have witnessed centuries of stories and traditions.

This event has been graded as 'moderate' access due to nativating steep staircases.
