Native to South America, llamas are becoming a big hit in the UK.
These intriguing, intelligent creatures can provide a wonderful family day out, especially since many llama farms are set in areas of outstanding natural beauty. Here are our top picks from across the UK.
Situated on Penare Farm near Truro, Llama Land is one of the few llama farms that welcome kids of all ages. Under-fives go free, but they can’t walk their own llama.
You’ll start by getting to know all of the llamas, learning how to handle them and discovering their personalities. Your kids then get to choose which llama they want to take on a trek. You’ll wander through tranquil ancient woodlands and over lush rolling hills.
You’ll all be ready for refreshment back at the farm, and lunch and drinks are included with your booking.
Another one open to kids of all ages, this one is set within the exquisite surroundings of the Lake District.
They offer a range of treks, from roving half-day treks to one-hour treks that are easier for those with little legs.
Your kids can also get stuck in with the ‘Hands-On Llama Fun and Facts’ workshop. They’ll meet some llamas, learn all about them and have a go at looking after them, before taking them for a short walk around the paddock.
At the edge of Snowdonia, you’ll find Black Rock Llamas.
This one only allows children over seven, but if your kids are old enough then they’re in for a truly unforgettable day.
You’ll begin with a talk from the expert guide, who’ll tell you and the kids all about the llamas and how to handle them.
Then you’ll all head off on a relaxing stroll with your new buddies, taking in the spectacular scenery of Snowdonia.
The icing on the cake is the unmissable llama agility activity. Your kids will get to race each other leading their llamas over jumps and around obstacles. They’ll even meet the only llama with a Guinness World Record!
A half-hour drive from the splendid town of Harrogate is Nidderdale Llamas.
Kids over seven can enjoy the Junior Experience, hanging out with the llamas in the barn before taking them for a short walk around the farm.
They also have a choice of treks, the highlight being the three-hour Scenic Farm Trek for kids aged ten and over. The knowledgeable staff will introduce your kids to the llamas, match them up with a suitable one, then guide you all on a trek with breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales.
Set in the shadow of Canary Wharf, this is one of the only places in London where you’ll meet a llama. Sadly, your kids won’t get to trek any llamas through the busy streets. But they’ll see and (hopefully) stroke a llama or two, as well as a host of other farm animals, in this oasis of green in the big city.
This place is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and best of all, it’s free admission.
There’s so much more to these awesome animals than lugging cargo through the mountains. Find your nearest llama farm and see for yourself!
