We all know that taking children to visit farms combines two of their deepest pleasures, mud and animals, all in the one place. What better way to spend a family weekend than petting cute animals and showing the kids how real farms work? With this in mind, we have listed five of the top kid-friendly farms in the UK.
Based in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, Good Day Out offers the opportunity for your kids to engage with friendly small to medium-sized animals. They have some very fun activities like a piggy walk and a pig-nic, or walking a mini donkey. There is also an educational sheepdog experience for curious children who want to learn more about how shepherding works. Most of these experiences must be pre-booked due to demand.
This is a city farm in the heart of East London and is an ideal opportunity for city-dwellers to show their children another side of life, one that couldn’t be less urban. Spanning 32 acres, Mudchute Farm is the largest inner-city farm in Europe and they have many animals for kids to interact with. These range from small pettable creatures like guinea pigs and rabbits, all the way up to horses, cows and pigs. Visiting is free but they will gladly accept donations.
As part of any visit to this scenic farm near Durham, there is a tractor and trailer ride included in the entry price. On top of that there are many lovely animals to get to know and spend time with including lambs during lambing season, baby chicks and rabbits. There is also an indoor barn soft play area and an outdoor adventure playground to keep the kids entertained, as well as crazy golf and a barrel train, which looks like great fun! Hall Hill Farm charges for entry and groups must book in advance.
Set in the countryside outside Aberdeen, Wynford Farm Park offers plenty of opportunities for kids to play, as well as getting up close with a variety of cute animals. Get hands on with the smaller creatures like bunnies, guinea pigs and chicks at fluffy animal handling sessions, feed the pygmy goats and try out the pedal go-karts and tractors in the adventure playground. Don't worry if it rains - there's an indoor play barn with soft play and a role play village, plus a cafe.
If you’re looking for a great day out for all the family, Baylham House in Suffolk is ideal. This is a farm with many rare breeds of farm animals. There are safe play areas for children and numerous animals that are just waiting to be fed by young visitors. Does balancing food on the outstretched tongue of a cow sound like fun? How about tickling a piglet’s tummy? Relaxing on the banks of the lake with a picnic? Well, this is the place for you. Baylham House doesn’t require prior reservations and can be paid for on the day.
