Our guitarists learn from a structured framework involving posture, technique and repertoire. Units such as strumming, plucking and developing compositional skills are enjoyed with a wide range of genres, songs and special compositions. The guitar groups perform together regularly, and enjoying singing too!

Guitar - Monday 5pm

Now the fun really begins! Lessons are driven by the child’s sense of curiosity in how music works. With song, notation and appropriate piano technique, lessons are an excellent introduction to notation and piano learning.

Piano Play - Thursday

Using a long-standing framework for keyboard learning our pupils learn to incorporate technique with learning creative composition, singing and notation. Many genres and styles are explored including classical, jazz, pop and blues. Lessons develop each child's understanding of notation, rhythm, technical dexterity and composition. Sight-reading and aural training run alongside a repertoire of pieces each term. Our annual concerts celebrate every pupil’s achievement with performances on our Boston Steinway grand piano.

Joyful, shared instrumental play, moving, dancing and listening to real instruments. Topics are captured with colourful puppets, ribbons, scarves and beautiful resources for all.

Developing spontaneous speech and nurturing language is achieved from immersive musical play. A music framework encompasses movement, miniature stories, songs and instrumental play. The shared process of learning provides ideas and resources for continued musical support at home.

Music for Language Development

In small groups, we begin to develop our pupils' skills in more depth by exploring formal techniques. They include plucking, bowing, posture and cross-bridge playing. Children are encouraged to listen and perform to each other, as well as to play along with the music teacher. Aural and sight-reading exercises given each week prepare our young musicians for later experiences with orchestral groups. As with other groups all pupils perform in an annual concert.

Pre-school ages develop earliest musical comprehension through a range of thoughtfully woven music activities, using visual resources, a range of instruments (un-tuned and tuned), musical games and notation flash cards. As a precursor to instrumental lessons, music appreciation classes capture imaginative musical play whilst embedding a thorough understanding of how music works.

An innate understanding of music is taught using a bespoke framework to capture all areas of development including composition, playing together and solo, trying a range of different instruments and listening different genres. Notation is introduced through movement, flash cards and playful visual resources. Special topics capture a sense of adventure and helps creative musical play to flourish.

These bright, cheerful instruments are the most perfect small string instruments for children to enjoy learning music in their earliest stages. With a similar framework to guitar tuition pupils learn to strum, pluck, sing along, play together and perform to each other.

What is an agogo? How about a Woosha?! Young children experience a whole range of percussion instruments, how they work, the history and different sounds they make. Through live instrumental play, children learn music terminology, and play different genres solo, in groups, and get the chance to perform too!

Music House for Children

We have been nurturing musical learning for nearly 25 years. Much of our inspiration comes from the great Italian Reggio Emilia, French Émile Jaques-Dalcroze and Hungarian Zoltan Kodaly. Using moving, listening, looking and vocalising to learn, communicate and understand is at the core of each approach – our children’s joyful response tells us we are doing something right.

We encourage enquiring minds and creative independence. Our child-initiated approach helps children to compose, learn new skills, and importantly helps with language and life skills. Our teaching programmes, multi-arts projects, shows and storytelling workshops are constantly refreshed by working with like-minded specialists.


Our musicians and teachers love teaching and performing and share our ethos in nurturing independent, curious and creative musical beings. We collaborate to find new ways of delivering music, developing language acquisition and drawing on children’s strengths whatever their need. We keep up-to-date with our colleagues around the world in the ever-changing global shifts in approaches to education.

Music House for Children’s school is a hive of teaching, learning, performing, with training opportunities for teachers too. Our year-round workshops, lessons and performances are a fabulous array of artistic ideas with embedded learning goals. Music facilitates areas critical to young children’s development including communication, an understanding of the curriculum and life-skills. Our training courses, provide a complete package of resources, ideas, songs and skills for nursery groups and early years professionals.
