Top 5 Family Hockey Clubs in London

1 August 2023

If you're based in the London area, you've got a huge range of hockey clubs to choose from for your children to join. We've put together a selection of the best options for families. Most accept kids from the age of 5 and encourage parents to get involved in club life as well.

Burnt Ash Hockey Club

Based in South East London, Burnt Ash welcomes families, with parents encouraged to get involved in the social side of their youth division and discounts on membership for additional family members. They hold weekly training sessions for kids from the age of 5 upwards. There are regular friendly matches for 7-12 year olds, while teens can take part in league games. The DBS-checked, qualified coaches aim to improve children's self-confidence alongside their hockey skills.

London Wayfarers Hockey Club

As the UK's largest hockey club, you'll find plenty of opportunities for all the family at London Wayfarers. They have training at a number of locations and over 900 children and teenagers regularly taking part, so there's something for everyone. The "Minis" section is for children aged 5-7, while there's a mixed team for 7-8 year olds, before teams are split into boys and girls sides, and special training sessions for goalkeepers. Parents are encouraged to volunteer and support the children.

Tulse Hill and Dulwich Hockey Club

This long-established club is open to any children aged 5-16 who want to play, regardless of experience level. Parents are encouraged to volunteer, whether that's helping out with coaching or the social side of the club. Teen members are given opportunities to volunteer with the younger ones, learning valuable coaching and umpiring skills. Go along for a free taster session and experience how friendly and supportive the coaches are.

Richmond Hockey Club

Richmond Hockey Club was founded in 1874, so it has a long, proud history of playing the sport. Parents play important roles in the running of the teams and there are opportunities to learn coaching and umpiring skills. The youngest kids in their juniors section play short 5-a-side games, then they move up to 7-a-side and eventually 11-a-side games on a full-sized pitch. If you're looking for a family-orientated hockey club in South West London, Richmond is an excellent choice.

Ealing Hockey Club

Unlike the long-established clubs, Ealing Hockey Club was only founded after the 2012 Olympics, but it has thrived in its relatively short life. There's a strong community and family focus - while the club originated just for juniors, due to popular demand they now have adult teams, plus casual social hockey sessions. Their juniors section of around 350 players is open to all abilities, aiming to get everyone playing at their best. The Little Sticks sessions get kids under 7 started at hockey, while older ones can join teams and play competitive matches. For parents and older siblings who don't wish to play, they welcome volunteers to help with all aspects of running the club.
