BMX is popular amongst children and teenagers; it’s a sport where they can pick up speed, learn specific skills and impressive tricks, and progress to a top competition level. Recently, BMX has risen in popularity, and now, across the country, there are tracks for children to use recreationally or with a club attached to help learners improve. London has the most clubs to choose from, and here are 5 of the best.
The BMX race track at Brockwell Park is a hub for activity and for enthusiastic riders of all ages and abilities to practise and, most importantly, enjoy. This is an excellent place for your child to learn the sport and a friendly, welcoming club that oozes nurture and support whilst helping children reach the top. For most of the week, the track is open for free use; however, from 9-1 at the weekends, it closes for specific training sessions divided into novices, intermediates and experts, and a qualified British Cycling coach teaches the groups.
The Tottenham BMX race club is a great place for children 7+ through to young adults to meet and learn their sport. Based at the Lordship Rec Loop pump track, riders can attend an age-appropriate coached class or join in a freestyle session open to all ages and abilities, with help on hand to give tips and advice to help kids improve.
Located in Haggerston Park, East London, Hackney BMX club is an incredible track with incredible opportunities. The club is run by excellent volunteers who lead sessions for all abilities and ages. They have the commitment to nurture and develop talent who want to either continue at a recreational level or progress to racing regionally and nationally. This club also stands out for its work in helping children and families enter a sport with a focus that otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity.
Based in Southwark, The BMX Track, London is home to Peckham BMX club and has it sussed to support all learning from youngsters on balance bikes through to an intermediate level. Most training lessons take place on a Sunday, but dotted throughout the week are organised Rock up and Ride sessions; although for this, riders do not need to book or pay, they must have track accreditation. All sessions are run by a trained professional, and riders can get race-ready with the chance to practise using a start gate.
Lee Valley Velopark, at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is the British home of all things cycling. The BMX track is near the velodrome where Sir Chris Hoy won Olympic golds and welcomes children aged 7 and above to their hour-long weekly training sessions. This club will help your child to gain confidence and learn specific skills. They also run taster sessions, which is a great place to start, and day-long holiday activities.
