If your child dreams of being Robin Hood, why not sign them up to an archery club? The minimum age is usually 8 for children's archery sessions but this will vary depending on the club - we recommend contacting them to check. Archery is a fun sport which relies on skill and focus, rather than speed and strength, so it may appeal to children who aren’t keen on team sports - try it out at one of the clubs below.
Based in Greenwich, this club is indoors, so you don't have to contend with the British weather. They're open 7 days a week and allow children from the age of 8. Once you've taken their course or demonstrated your proficiency, you can either pay for 2 hour sessions or a monthly fee for unlimited weekday archery. Coaching is available in groups or on an individual basis and a range of different bows are available, or you can use your own and store it there. With two 18-metre ranges, there's space for 20 archers at once.
This North London based club runs family archery sessions for children aged 8-14 and their parents. The classes combine fun archery games with expert coaching. Teens from the age of 14 upwards can join a beginner archery course, which will allow them to join a club of their choice after completion. They also offer archery parties for kids aged 8 and above and their mobile service means they can come to your chosen venue.
Conveniently located near London Bridge station, 2020 Archery welcomes children aged 8-16 to their weekly family sessions. Parents can also have a go alongside their kids and all equipment is provided. The coaches aim to help children improve their coordination and concentration while having fun. The club participates in the FITA Feather and Arrows scheme, which allows kids to achieve badges to record their progress.
This club in West London welcomes members from the age of 10 upwards, so long as they have done a beginners course approved by Archery GB. Beginners courses can be arranged at the club. You can rent the equipment needed, or they can advise on what you should buy your child if they are serious about the sport. Based at Perivale Community Centre, the friendly club has access to both indoor and outdoor ranges.
Head to Southfields Archery Club for one of their beginners sessions, held at Aspire Leisure Centre, where children are welcome to take part with parental supervision. They provide all the equipment and the sessions always start with a safety briefing and technique demonstration from the instructor. The small groups ensure everyone gets plenty of time to shoot. You can join the archery club or the Aspire Centre to get a discount on sessions, if you go regularly. This is a great way to try out the sport without any commitment or expenditure on equipment.
