There are various music classes for kids from 0 to 4 where babies and toddlers can enjoy listening, playing and moving to music. There are even group classes for children starting school in some areas. It's a fun way to meet other kids and parents.
The classes give children confidence and help them with speech. They feel the rhythm and move and dance, which improves coordination. They sing along, learning to find and hold notes. They can practice self-expression with instruments and learn to socialise in groups. It’s an opportunity to have fun and share experiences with parents who learn activities they can continue at home. The classes are usually 40 minutes to an hour and the following organisations have classes across the UK:
Jo Jingles has 700 classes across the UK with franchisees following a structured outline in the lesson. Each week has a theme. It might be colours, shapes or numbers and includes well-known nursery rhymes. The children use tambourines, drums and bells to join in making music. Children identify with Jo Jingles, the mascot doll who leads the play.
Music Bugs split their classes into different age ranges. Baby Bugs is 0 to crawling, Mini Bugs is 6 to 24 months, Jumping Bugs is 1 ½ to 4 years old, and Family Bugs is for mixed ages. The classes are lightly structured and encourage communication. They use percussion instruments, puppets, parachutes, bubbles, teddies and hobby horses to engage children. They use nursery rhymes, counting songs, finger-play rhymes, knee bouncers and action songs.
Mini Mozart classes pride themselves on having live music from an orchestra instrument like a clarinet, a violin or a trumpet and the piano. They are interactive in a way recorded music cannot be. The instrument is brought out of its case and the children see how it is put together and then how to make a noise on it. They can touch it and have a go.
At Monkey Music children are welcomed with a song by the teacher dressed in a monkey costume. They go on to sing, dance and play musical instruments. They can join the Monkey Band. The group is a social opportunity for parents and a source of peer support. They run holiday workshops and parties
Kindermusik is an international organisation that has classes for children from 0 up to the age of 7. The classes are split by age. Kindermusik has the philosophy that all children are musical and sets out to nurture their language, cognitive, physical, emotional, social and musical development. The programme combines the early learning methods of Carl Orff, Zoltan Kodaly and Suzuki. School children can develop a strong foundation in the notation as well as sound of music and be introduced to the great composers. It's great preparation for learning an instrument.
All of these classes are designed to be great fun whilst inspiring and stimulating children. Many are free for the first trial class. Use the links below to the Hoop app where you can find out what’s available in your area and give it a go. You will leave humming a tune for the rest of the day.
