At What Age can Kids Start Modern Dance?

15 March 2023

When it comes to dance, there are many different types that can be learned, including ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance. Children often start learning ballet at a young age but it can be hard to know when is the right time for them to try other types of dance. This article focuses on modern dance - read on for some pointers on whether your child is ready to learn it.

What is Modern Dance?

Modern dance is a performance art form that emphasises full-body expression and individual style. Unlike other dance forms, there are no set movements or steps that dancers must follow - instead, dancers are free to experiment and create their own unique routines. While anyone can do modern dance, it is particularly popular with children and teenagers. The creative, expressive and active nature of modern dance tends to appeal to young people and it's also a great opportunity to make new friends.

What Age can Kids Start Learning Modern Dance?

There is no definitive answer to this question. The decision of when to start depends on several factors, including your child's physical development, interests and ability to follow instructions. Some kids may be fine with starting aged three or four, but others may not be ready until they are slightly older.

When it comes to formal dance classes, it's best to wait until your child is five or six years old. This will give them more time to develop coordination and motor skills, so they'll be less likely to get frustrated or overwhelmed. Ultimately, the best way to know for sure if your child is ready for modern dance classes is to speak to a professional instructor. They will be able to assess your child's capabilities and level of interest and advise you on whether now is the right time to start.

How Long Does it Take Kids to Learn Modern Dance?

Again, there's no universal answer to this question. Generally speaking, most youngsters will need at least 1-2 years of regular classes before they can perform a routine confidently. This will vary depending on their age, natural abilities, and how often they attend classes. Younger children may need to spend the first few months developing basic skills such as coordination and balance, whereas older ones may progress more quickly, mastering more complex movements in a shorter time. So long as your child is enjoying the classes, they will be getting plenty out of the experience.

How do you know if your Child is Ready to Learn Modern Dance?

Although there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, a few general guidelines can help you determine whether your child is ready. First, consider their age and physical development. Modern dance requires a certain level of coordination and stamina, so it is generally best suited to children who are at least six years old. Passion is very important for dancers. If your child enthusiastically expresses themselves through movement and dancing to music, they will likely thrive in a modern dance class. If they show little interest in dance, now is probably not the time.

Modern dance is a great way for kids to express themselves and have fun. If you think your child might be interested, talk to a professional instructor to determine if they are ready to start classes.
