5 Places To Fish In London

24 September 2023

For many children, fishing is the perfect summer activity. It's a great way to spend time outdoors, enjoy fresh air, and maybe even catch a whopper. Be aware that you may need to purchase a day pass or season ticket before fishing at these sites, and adults and those over 12 will need an Environment Agency fishing licence. If you're looking for somewhere to take the kids fishing in London, here are 5 great spots.

River Thames

The River Thames runs through the middle of London and is a great spot for fishing with kids. There are many free fishing sites, and the river is easy to access. It’s home to various fish, including carp, bream, perch, and pike. With a little patience, kids can catch a fish or two. In addition to being a fun activity, fishing can teach kids about freshwater ecosystems and the importance of conserving our natural resources. Just make sure you choose somewhere where there’s no danger of your kids falling in the river, as the currents are strong.

Redbridge Lakes

In North-East London, Redbridge Lakes offers two well-stocked lakes for casual and competition fishing, including roach, chub, rudd, bream and perch. You’ll need to pay a small monthly membership fee and an hourly or daily charge for fishing, but children under 16 can fish for free with a paying adult. The friendly community site has a cafe, children’s play area and nature trails and it is home to many water birds, so there’s plenty to keep the little ones entertained if they get bored waiting for a bite on their rod.

Battersea Park

Battersea Park is a 200-acre Victorian park on the south bank of the Thames, easily accessed by public transport and close to the new Battersea Power Station development. The large lake is home to a range of different fish, including bream, tench, roach, and carp. You can make a day out of it, as there are plenty of other activities on offer, including boating, playgrounds, a children’s zoo, and sports facilities.

Epping Forest

Epping Forest in North East London is a sprawling collection of green spaces which includes 25 fishing ponds, so you’ve got lots of options to choose from. Once you're there, you'll be able to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and wildlife. And who knows? Maybe you'll even catch a fish or two.

Clapham Common Ponds

Clapham Common Ponds is one of London's best places to take kids fishing. With two lakes to choose from, it's easy to find a spot that's right for your child's age and skill level. And with a cheap licence, it's an affordable way to enjoy quality time together. There's also a great variety of fish to be caught, including carp, tench, bream, roach, and rudd. There’s plenty of space to run around and play areas if the kids do get bored.
