If you're looking for a great family-friendly activity, why not try fishing? Not only is it a great way to bond with your kids, but it's also a terrific way to teach them patience and responsibility. In this blog post, we'll share five great family fishing trips in the UK that are sure to be fun for everyone. Just make sure you’ve got the appropriate rod licences and passes for the location you’re fishing in.
Voted the nation’s favourite river in 2010, the Wye is also popular among anglers, and for good reason. Over 30 fish species have been found there, and it’s teeming with brown trout, grayling, salmon and barbel, making it the perfect place to cast a line with the whole family. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as it winds its way along the border between England and Wales and relax with a picnic.
Windermere is another fantastic option for a family fishing trip with its incredible views and plethora of fish. You'll find plenty of rainbow trout, brown trout, and char swimming in these waters, waiting to be caught by you and your little ones. And when you need a break from all the excitement, take a stroll around the lake to enjoy the stunning scenery. It’s the longest lake in England and one of only three public fishing lakes in the Lake District.
If you want to give sea fishing a go with your family, head to the Bristol Channel. Here, you'll be able to catch mackerel, pollock, flatfish, ray, and cod. Just be sure to bring along some seasickness tablets if you get queasy on boats. Trust us; it'll be worth it once you see the smile on your kids' faces when they reel in their first big catch. And when you're not fishing, take advantage of the Bristol Channel's other great attractions, like its beaches, cliff walks, and wildlife.
If you want to up the ante on your family fishing trip, Derwentwater is the place to go. This sprawling lake is home to pike, perch, roach, and eel - so there's something here for everyone. It's also one of only 2 lakes in the country to have stocks of the rare vendace fish. It’s located in the scenic Lake District National Park, with walking trails, boat tours, horse riding, cycling and more nearby to keep you and your family entertained.
Last but not least is the River Tweed, which runs through England and Scotland. It's one of the best spots in the UK for salmon fishing - but beware, this is more suited for older children and those with experience, as it can be quite difficult! If you're up for it, it'll be an unforgettable experience for you and your kids. If you want to make a holiday of it, the river is not far from Edinburgh with its famous castle, and on the English side, there’s the beautiful Lindisfarne Holy Island, reached by a causeway.
These are just a few of our favourite family-friendly fishing spots in the UK - but there are plenty more around the country. So get out there and explore with your loved ones, and you'll discover your new favourite spot together.
