Festival of Blossom: moth and butterfly trail at Gibside

Join us this Festival of Blossom and May half term for a family scavenger hunt all about butterflies and moths. Flutter and fly your way around Gibside on a scavenger hunt to find butterflies and moths. Learn about some of our most important pollinators and why we need to look after them. Running 10am – 4pm. Free (normal admission applies). This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. Pick up a trail sheet at Visitor Reception. This event takes place outside. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather conditions. The trail takes about 2 hours and includes inclines, rough terrain, grass, and the potential for mud and/or icy conditions. This event is aimed at families, but everyone is welcome. Gibside Get a taste for the history of Gibside with a Guided Walk volunteer. Dive into the history of Gibside and take a walk with a Guided Walk volunteer around the 18th century landscape garden. Take part in a health walk around Gibside. Join us on a guided tour of the 18th century landscape garden and visualise the grandeur that once was the pride of George Bowes.

Beaver enclosure safari at Wallington

New for 2024 Following the arrival of beavers at Wallington in the summer of 2023, the first in Northumberland for over 400 years, we're delighted to be working with Wild Intrigue to bring you beaver enclosure safaris this year. Spend time with beaver ecologists Wild Intrigue on this beaver enclosure safari at Wallington immersing yourself on the world of wetlands, finding out all about this fascinating species. Look for signs of activity, see how they are already changing and shaping the landscape and witness the impacts this Keystone Species can have on other plants, animals and even the behaviour of water. Beavers are nocturnal creatures. This is not a safari to see the beavers themselves but to explore and enjoy the world they live in and the differences they are making to the landscape. Call 07484 214610 Suitable for over 12's Head to Wallington for 10am if you would like to make use of the toilet facilities before driving up to the enclosure for your safari. Otherwise, head straight to the enclosure for 10.30am The terrain in the beaver enclosure is uneven and likely to be soggy underfoot, please wear appropriate wellies or walking boots. Waterproofs might not be a bad idea. This is not a tour to see beavers, as nocturnal animals, they will be tucked up in bed during this safari. Please note that any photos taken during this safari are for personal use only. There are no toilet facilities within the enclosure. Head to Wallington for 10am if you would like to make use of the toilet facilities before driving up to the enclosure for your safari. Otherwise, head straight to the enclosure for 10.30am Suitable for adults, and young people aged 12 and above (accompanied by a ticket holding adult) Attending the beaver enclosure safari does not include entry to Wallington. Wild Intrigue Discover the fascinating world of moths. Enjoy an evening in the Central Hall at Wallington with beaver ecologists Wild Intrigue and Wallington's Lead Ranger Helen McDonald to find out more about this intriguing native species. Discover what lies beneath on a tour of the cellar at Wallington. Explore the incredible world of insects on a trail in the Walled Garden this May half term.

Washington: Fact, Fiction and Folklore

A multi-media exhibition to celebrate Washington’s past, both real and mythical, marking 60 years as a New Town. Washington Heritage Partnership has worked with Arts Centre Washington and Washington Old Hall to deliver this exciting new arts project, built around Washington’s multi-layered history. Taking inspiration from the book of the same name by Fred Hill, the local historian and schoolmaster who played a key role in saving Washington Old Hall, local artists from the Sunderland Indie collective have produced a multimedia exhibition of contemporary art. From July, the exhibition will move on to Arts Centre Washington. This event is free, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. Children welcome, must be accompanied by an adult. Find the exhibition in the old café. Access to the old café is via steps. An accessible route is available on request - please speak to a member of staff. Washington Old Hall Join us for a free guided walk to Penshaw Monument, to appreciate the changes each season brings. Bringing history to life at Washington Old Hall Local musicians make a visit to Washington Old Hall extra special. Innovative and rip-roaring outdoor theatre for all ages.
