5 Benefits of Yoga for Kids

Perhaps you’ve heard yoga suggested as an activity for your kids, but you’re not sure how they could benefit? Read on as we go into detail about some of what they stand to gain from practising yoga on a regular basis.

Improves strength and flexibility

One of the most obvious reasons yoga is so great for young people is that it helps to improve strength and flexibility. As kids grow, their bodies undergo many changes, and yoga can help them stay strong and flexible. Regular yoga training can also help to prevent injuries during other activities by teaching kids how to use their bodies properly and how to keep their muscles supple. 

Boosts self-esteem

Yoga is a great way for kids to boost their self-esteem. Through yoga, kids learn to focus on breathing and connect with their bodies. They begin to see themselves in a more positive light. They also learn to be present in the moment and to let go of negative thoughts. By becoming more aware of their strengths and abilities, they can start to believe in themselves more. Yoga can also help young people learn to appreciate their bodies for what they can do rather than how they look.

Promotes balance

Certain yoga poses improve balance and can help kids develop a sense of control and coordination. For example, the tree pose requires kids to stand on one foot and raise the other leg while keeping their arms raised overhead. This can be a challenging pose, but it's very rewarding when they can maintain their balance. Balance is needed to excel at many other sports and activities, such as gymnastics, boxing and surfing, so by learning yoga your kids have a good foundation for whatever other sports they choose to try. 

Enhances focus and concentration

One of the benefits of yoga is that it can help to improve focus and concentration, as it requires stillness and calm. When kids can focus and concentrate, they retain information better and are less likely to be distracted, so their performance at school will improve. Children who practise yoga may find it easier to calm down and avoid tantrums or meltdowns.

Reduces stress and anxiety

Stress and anxiety are a part of life, but they can be especially debilitating for children and teenagers. Yoga is a great way for kids to reduce stress and anxiety. Through breath work and relaxation techniques, children learn to focus and connect with their bodies. As they become more aware of their breathing, they also become more aware of the tension in their muscles and learn how to release that tension and relax. The gentle movements of yoga help to calm the mind and body. 

Yoga offers many benefits to children and is a great way for kids to stay healthy and happy, and the best thing is that yoga can be done anywhere, at any time. Why not give it a try?
