Child Bike Seat or Child Trailer - Which is Better

16 February 2023

When it comes to biking with young children, there are two main options: a child bike seat or a child bike trailer. Both have pros and cons, but which one is the best choice for you? Here are five differences between child bike seats and trailers.

Cost

There are several factors to consider when choosing between a child bike seat and a child bike trailer. One consideration is cost. Child bike seats tend to be less expensive than child bike trailers. However, child bike trailers offer more features and tend to be more durable, so they may be a better investment in the long run. Deciding which option to choose will come down to your budget and your child's needs.

Weight

There is a significant weight difference when it comes to child bike seats and child bike trailers. Child bike seats typically weigh between 1 - 4 kilograms, whereas child bike trailers can weigh 20 kilograms. The weight difference is because child bike trailers must be able to accommodate both the child and all of their gear. In addition, child bike trailers are designed to be towed behind the adult bicycle, which adds to their overall weight. While the extra weight of a child's bike trailer may be more difficult to pedal, it is worth it to know that your child will be safely secured while enjoying the ride.

Age range

Bike seats are designed for children who can sit up on their own unassisted and hold their heads up without help. On the other hand, bike trailers are better suited for younger children who can sit up unassisted but may need help holding their heads up. This age difference is because bike trailers provide a higher level of support than bike seats. In addition, bike trailers have a lower centre of gravity than bike seats, making them less likely to tip over.

Storage

A child bike seat is easier to store than a child bike trailer. It can be removed from the bicycle and stored in a cupboard or garage. On the other hand, a child bike trailer is bulky and difficult to move when not attached to a bicycle. Therefore, it must be stored in a shed or garage, taking up valuable space. In addition, a child bike trailer must be regularly cleaned and maintained, whereas a child bike seat requires little upkeep.

Safety

Child bike seats are designed to be mounted on the back of an adult bike, and they usually have a harness that secures the child in place. This design can provide a high level of security, but it can also be tricky to mount the seat securely, and the child may be less visible to other road users. On the other hand, child bike trailers are towed behind the adult bike. This means that the child is more visible, but it also means that they are further away from the adult, making it harder to communicate. Both child bike seats and child bike trailers can be safe options, but it's important to think about what's best for your child.

There are several factors to consider when choosing between a child bike seat and a child bike trailer. Cost, weight, age range, storage, and safety are important factors to consider. The best option for you will be the one that best suits your needs and budget.
