Do Schools Offer Basketball Clubs?

15 July 2023

Basketball is not as big a sport in the UK as it is in the USA and many other countries. It’s a fun sport which has many benefits for players, including improved fitness, teamwork skills and decision making. But do many schools in the UK offer basketball as part of their sports curriculum?

Basketball in the UK

Basketball is becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom. Many parks have basketball courts and it’s a popular recreational activity for young people. More and more schools are starting to offer it as a way for students to stay active and engaged with their peers. It’s a sport that can be played either indoors or outdoors, great for the fickle British weather. While football and rugby are still the most popular sports in the UK, basketball is slowly gaining ground.

Do Schools Offer Basketball Clubs?

The answer to this question depends on the school. Some schools do offer basketball clubs, while others do not. If your child is interested in playing basketball, you should ask their school if they have a club. If not, other options may be available, such as joining a community basketball team or an after-school basketball program.

Joining the School Basketball Team

If your child is interested in joining a basketball club, the first step is to talk to their school’s PE teacher or another staff member. Many schools have a formal process for joining sports teams, so it is important to determine the requirements at your child’s school. Sometimes, your child may need to try out for the team or participate in a training camp before being accepted onto the squad. However, many schools have informal clubs that anyone can join. If your child’s school does not have a formal basketball club, they may still be able to play informally with their classmates.

After-School Basketball Programmes

Another option for your child to play basketball is to sign up for an after-school programme. Local community organisations or private companies usually run these programmes. They typically involve weekly practices and games against other teams in the area. It’s an excellent way for your child to stay active and make new friends, especially if your child doesn’t have the option of playing basketball at their school. We've listed some of the best basketball clubs for kids in the UK here. There are also holiday camps available where your child can play more intensely and improve their skills. Check out the Hoop app (links below) for sports and activity classes happening in your area.

The Benefits of Playing Basketball

Basketball is a great way to stay active and fit and can also help develop teamwork skills. Playing basketball can also be a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends. It can relieve stress and anxiety and improve coordination and balance. If your child is interested in playing basketball, encourage them to talk to their school about joining a club or team.
