Is Singing Good for Our Kids?

26 June 2023

Children love to sing, whether it’s nursery rhymes, songs they’ve heard on the radio or just something they’ve made up on the spot. It’s a fun activity which can be done anywhere, but it also has benefits for children’s development - read on to find out more.

Encourages speech and language

Singing can help kids with their speech and language development in a few ways. It helps to develop the mouth and vocal cords, important for speech development as kids need to make the right sounds correctly to speak clearly. Singing different songs encourages kids to use words and phrases more creatively and helps them learn new words and understand how they can use them differently.

Develops social skills

Singing together is a social activity. By working together to create something beautiful, children learn how to cooperate and communicate with one another. This can help them in all aspects of their lives, from school to friendships. Discovering that other children they meet know the same songs as them can help them to bond. This can be especially important for kids who are shy or don't feel like they fit in elsewhere. Teaching songs they’ve learned to other children and adults helps them improve their social skills too.

Boosts confidence and self-esteem

Singing is excellent for children because it can boost their confidence and self-esteem. When children sing, they are in control of the music and the sound they make. This gives them a feeling of power and mastery, which can boost their confidence. Singing also allows children to express their feelings and emotions. This can be cathartic for them and help them deal with difficult emotions.

Teaches discipline and patience

Singing is a great activity for children because it teaches discipline and patience. When a child is singing, they have to focus on the task and be patient to produce a good result. This teaches them essential skills they can use in other areas of life. Learning songs requires practice and dedication and helps kids to improve their attention span.

Benefits their health

Singing helps children relax and de-stress. When children sing, they often feel a sense of joy and calm. This is because singing helps to release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Kids can use singing as a way to calm themselves and start to manage their emotions when they’re feeling overwhelmed. Studies have shown that singing can lower blood pressure and heart rate, and it can also help to improve breathing and lung capacity.

Singing is a great way to improve your child's development. It can encourage speech and language development and also provide emotional benefits. So next time you're looking for a fun activity to do with your child, consider singing some songs. Who knows, you may end up making beautiful music together.
