What Age Can My Child start Taekwondo

1 January 2023

Many parents wonder whether their child is old enough to start Taekwondo. The answer, as with most things, is that it depends. There are different stages you can start Taekwondo, and the age at which your child begins will depend on their individual development. It's important to remember that every child is different, so you should always consult with a qualified instructor before starting your child in any martial art programme.

Toddler

Taekwondo classes for toddlers usually focus on basic motor skills and coordination rather than actual techniques. This is because most toddlers lack the attention span and physical control needed to execute the moves properly. However, classes can still be beneficial for toddlers as they help develop balance, coordination, and discipline. While there is no evidence that starting Taekwondo at an early age gives children a competitive advantage, it can be a fun way for them to burn off energy and socialise with other kids.

3 - 6 Years Old

At this age, children are able to start learning basic Taekwondo techniques. They will also begin to develop the focus and discipline needed to execute the moves properly. Classes at this age usually involve a lot of games and activities to keep the children engaged, as well as to teach them the basic principles of Taekwondo. Most children will be able to start participating in competitions by the time they are six years old.

6 - 12 Years Old

At this age, children are able to start refining their techniques and learning more advanced moves. They will also begin to develop greater focus and discipline. Classes at this age usually involve a mix of techniques, games, and activities. By the time they are 12 years old, children should be able to execute all the basic Taekwondo techniques with proper form. Many experts believe this age range is the optimal time to start learning Taekwondo, as children's bodies are still developing and they are more likely to retain what they learn.

12 - 18 Years Old

At this age, Taekwondo students will continue to refine their techniques and learn more advanced moves. They will also continue to develop greater focus and discipline. Classes at this age usually involve a mix of techniques, drills, and sparring. By the time they are 18 years old, Taekwondo students should be able to execute all the basic and advanced Taekwondo techniques with proper form. Children starting Taekwondo at this age should have a strong foundation that will allow them to progress quickly.

18 Years Old and Up

Taekwondo students will continue to develop and learn more sophisticated skills at this age. They will also continue to develop greater focus and discipline. Classes at this age usually involve a mix of sparring, forms, and techniques. There really is no limit to what age you can start Taekwondo. Some of the most successful Taekwondo athletes began training in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s.

Taekwondo is a martial art that can be started at any age. However, the age at which you start will depend on your individual development. In general, children can start learning Taekwondo techniques as early as three years old. However, they may not be able to properly execute the moves until they are a bit older.
