5 Things to do in Edinburgh this Half Term

12 June 2023

When your kids are on half-term break, it is a wonderful opportunity to give them a breather and explore the world outside of school. Make sure not to waste the time and opportunity to explore and enjoy Edinburgh. These 5 sites are a must-visit for you and your kids:

Camera Obscura and World of Illusions

Nothing amazes the minds of kids more than optical illusions. And make no mistake, the illusions found in the World of Illusions are unlike any others in the world! When you do decide to visit, make sure you don’t miss the Vortex Tunnel, the Mirror Maze, and the Tantrix game. Their shops might be a bit pricey, but their products are really good quality. We suggest you make the most out of the experience and get some souvenirs for the whole family!

Edinburgh Dungeon

If you want to teach your kids a little more about the history of Edinburgh, look no further than the Edinburgh Dungeons! You’ll go through a thrill-filled adventure with the family and learn a lot about the history of Scotland - just not in the most traditional way! The dungeons are filled with spooky rides, actors and theatrical sets to get you having a great time. The fully immersive sets are unlike anything you’ve seen and really stand out among the other generic attractions out there.

National Museum of Scotland

There’s something for everyone in this historic yet dynamic museum. Full of awe-inspiring artefacts and interactive exhibits, the whole family will have a fun time learning about subjects including Scottish history, science and technology, natural history and fashion. The Imagine gallery is aimed specifically at the under 5s, while older kids can learn about scientific innovations in the Explore gallery, which even features the first cloned animal, Dolly the sheep. If you get peckish, there are two cafes, one of which has views over the striking Grand Gallery, plus a picnic area.

Royal Yacht Britannia

The Royal Yacht Britannia welcomes over 390,000 visitors annually and is one of Edinburgh's most incredible attractions. It is the former royal yacht of the British monarchy - and you can even take a peek at the Queen’s old bedroom! If you do decide to visit this historic ship, make sure to also pay a visit to the Ocean Terminal complex nearby for its cinema, gift shops, and delicious food stalls.

Edinburgh Castle

We would be surprised if this isn’t on everyone’s to-do list when visiting Edinburgh. This fabulous castle has a breathtaking view over the city, including the River Forth. When visiting the castle, you’ll be transported all the way to the Iron Age and see the world as it used to be. The queues getting inside the castle can be long at times, so make sure you arrive early.

These places will certainly not disappoint you, and the entire family. Whichever activity you choose to do, we’re sure you’ll have a great time!
