Top 5 Old Board Games that Kids will still Love

21 September 2023

With the rise of technology over the past few decades, board games have (unfortunately!) lost their popularity. However, during the recent pandemic, there has been a massive rise in board game popularity. With the country in lockdown and families unable to enjoy outside activities, it’s clear that lots of people were able to reflect upon the fact that nothing beats a good old-fashioned board game!

Gadgets simply cannot replace the rush and excitement of trying to beat each other in a board game, especially with the classic ones. And that’s exactly what we will be talking about now. Read on to find out the 5 best classic board games that your kids will love playing...

Scrabble

Scrabble is one of the best and most popular board games ever created. It has a brilliantly unique yet simple-to-understand design and can be great fun for the whole family. When it comes to expanding your child’s vocabulary, Scrabble is the go-to board game. There is no denying the fact that children who have spent time playing Scrabble develop their vocabulary in a fun, yet effective way. Make sure no phones are being used though, since your kids might get sneaky and cheat using the dictionary feature!

Taboo

Released in 1989, this team board game continues to be well-loved worldwide. The game's mechanism is based mainly on one’s ability to guess. To win a point (or get a card), players must be able to guess a word written on a card held by their teammate without saying some ‘taboo’ words. The team holding the most cards at the end of the game will be the winner. Taboo is excellent for children since it teaches them how to work together as a team and improves their communication skills.

Risk

Risk is a classic board game you’ll want your kids to experience. In this game, players will need to form alliances to bring down another camp, while they may be up against each other later on in the game. It builds up cooperation, coordination and lets kids learn how to not hold grudges when losing. A word of warning - a proper game of Risk can last days! It’s a strategy game so keep that in mind if you’re looking for something quick to play.

Pictionary

This board game has developed one of the best concepts ever designed for family games. Many argue that you don’t even have to buy the real Pictionary board game to play this game - and they’d be right. In this game, your teammates simply need to guess what you are trying to draw. A correct answer will gain your team a point, and the team with the most points wins. This game will put your drawing skills to the test and is super fun - no matter how old or young you might be!

Monopoly

The king of family board games. There’s just nothing that can beat a good old game of Monopoly with the family. The game's objective is to buy and develop groups of properties around the board and bankrupt all your opponents with the rent. This game is not only fun, but it also teaches your kids the value of saving, learning to wait for the best opportunity, and making the best out of their resources. Even though it’s the cause of many family arguments, if there’s one board game every kid has to try, it's Monopoly.
