Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway - for Kids

29 June 2023

The Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway is a railway attraction in Kent that is perfect for kids. It’s a great day out for all the family, and there are plenty of things to keep the little ones entertained. Here are 5 reasons why the Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway is great for kids.

The Bug Club

The Bug Club is a junior membership for children up to the age of 10 that includes newsletters, birthday cards, and badges. This makes the kids feel like they are part of something special. They have children's week and special event days where the kids can learn about the different aspects of the railway. There’s a reduced rate for children in the Bug Club when they travel on the railway and even special days when they can travel for free.

Santa specials

The railway offers a unique holiday experience for children with their Santa Specials. These seasonal steam train rides take children from New Romney to Hythe to visit Santa in his Grotto, where they can tell him what they would like for Christmas. Each child also receives an age-appropriate present from Santa before the return journey to Hythe. The price includes some seasonal refreshments too, making it a magical, memorable event for all the family.

Special kids' events

There are event days through the year, some of which are aimed specifically at children. There are opportunities to meet favourite children’s characters and take part in activities. Seasonal events celebrated at the railway include Easter, with an egg hunt, and Halloween. The railway can be used to get to other local events like country fayres and a bus rally. Check the website for the latest events and time your visit to coincide for extra family fun and excitement.

Model railway exhibition and Heritage Centre

The railway hosts a model railway exhibition that is great fun for kids. They have 24 scale model trains, which run up to 3.5 miles daily. The exhibition is also interactive, with exhibits that allow kids to push buttons to play with the trains, and there are model people in funny situations for children to look out for. The recently opened Heritage Centre is based at New Romney station and answers any questions your kids might have about the trains or the local area.

Great selection of food and snacks

Not only is it a fun and educational experience, but the railway also has a great selection of food, whether you’re looking for a full English breakfast, a casual lunch or a snack. Choose from the Hythe Coffee Shop, the Heywood Buffet at New Romney or the End of the Line Restaurant at Dungeness. The gift shops also sell snacks and souvenirs, so there’s no need to go hungry.

The Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway is a great attraction for kids. With plenty of things to keep them entertained, including the Bug Club, Santa Specials, and special events, there is something for everyone. Families can also enjoy the model railway exhibition and the great selection of food and snacks.
